The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has expressed its approval of Zizi Kodwa’s resignation from his position as a member of Parliament. Collen Malatji, the president of ANCYL, commended Kodwa for taking the appropriate action.
Kodwa tendered his resignation with immediate effect on Wednesday amidst public outcry over his return to Parliament despite facing corruption charges. The former minister of sport, arts, and culture is accused of involvement in transactions totaling nearly R1.7 million, allegedly received as kickbacks from his co-accused, former EOH boss Jehan Mackay.
Malatji emphasized that Kodwa’s decision to step down from both the ANC leadership and parliamentary duties was the right move. “He has voluntarily stepped aside from his leadership roles within the ANC and its structures until his name is cleared,” said Malatji. “His resignation from Parliament is another instance where heeded advice to step aside was well-advised. We support his effort to clear his name, and should he be acquitted, he remains welcome to resume his service.”
The ANCYL stands firm in its stance that public representatives should uphold integrity and accountability. They believe Kodwa’s decision to resign demonstrates a commitment to these principles and allows for due process to take its course.
“We urge all leaders to emulate this example of ethical conduct,” concluded Malatji.
