As Parliament gears up for its first sitting on Friday, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to initiate a re-election.
The MK party has named President Ramaphosa as a respondent in its urgent application to the Constitutional Court (ConCourt), aiming to halt the first parliamentary session of the week.
Despite not providing concrete evidence, the MK party claims there were widespread irregularities during the 2024 general elections. In its court documents, the party seeks to have the election results nullified, which would compel the president to set a new election date within 90 days.
The party argues that a technological glitch on May 31, which temporarily shut down the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC)’s systems, led to data loss. However, the IEC has previously asserted that the glitch did not affect vote capturing and results.
The MK party stated that it engaged information technology experts, whose report indicates significant and irredeemable weaknesses in the IEC’s systems. The party believes these findings are sufficient grounds to declare the election results null and void.
