How the DStv Content Creator Awards Are Evolving in Their Third Year

Published

DStv Content Creator Awards

In just a few short years, the DStv Content Creator Awards have evolved into a vital platform for recognising and celebrating the exceptional talent within South Africa’s digital content creation landscape. Founded by Manuela Dias De Deus, MD of communications agency One-eyed Jack, the awards were conceived from the realisation that while South Africa boasts incredibly talented digital creators, there was a glaring lack of recognition for their efforts.

The DStv Content Creator Awards fills this gap by providing a platform to showcase work and an ecosystem that supports both emerging and established creators. As entries for 2024 officially open, Manuela unpacks the origins, goals, and future of the awards, highlighting their profound impact on past winners and nominees and their expanding reach across Africa.

What did you hope these awards will achieve?

Our intention was to fill a gap in the industry not only by providing a platform to showcase content creators, but to create an ecosystem for emerging creators to have access to established creators, brands and agencies, with the aim of creating work and helping them monetise their content. The roll-out is significant, with mentorships, learning days, incubator workshops and webinars, all aimed at fostering opportunities, generating income, and fuelling creativity. We want to highlight the importance that digital creators have within the marketing and creative fields, and the impact they have shaping digital culture through their storytelling.

How do you select the nominees and winners for the awards?

The selection process for the DStv Content Creator Awards is rigorous and transparent. We have a diverse panel of judges comprising industry experts, influencers, and thought leaders who evaluate submissions based on creativity, originality, impact, and engagement. These submissions have been entered in by content creators or brands themselves. We also encourage public participation through voting in certain categories, ensuring that the audience has a voice in recognising their favourite creators. This dual approach ensures a balanced and fair evaluation of all nominees.

How has the public responded to the DStv Content Creator Awards so far?

The response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive. Audiences are thrilled to see their favourite creators being recognised and celebrated. We’ve seen a significant increase in engagement across all our channels, and the awards have sparked conversations about the importance of digital content creation. The support from the public has been instrumental in driving the success of the awards and highlights the impact these creators have on their communities.

What impact have the awards had on past winners and nominees?

The impact on past winners and nominees has been profound. Many have reported increased visibility and new opportunities for brand partnerships and collaborations. Some have even seen their follower counts and engagement metrics soar. Additionally, the credibility and recognition that come with winning a DStv Content Creator Award have opened doors for many creators, helping them to further their careers and expand their influence.

This year, the awards are expanding to the rest of Africa with the Pan-African Creator Award. Tell us more about that.

This new category marks a significant milestone in our mission to celebrate and recognise the outstanding talent across the entire African continent. The Pan-African Creator Award is designed to honour creators from various African countries who are making remarkable contributions to the digital space. By expanding our reach beyond South Africa, we aim to highlight the diversity and richness of African creativity and storytelling. This expansion allows us to bring together a broader spectrum of voices and perspectives, fostering a more inclusive and interconnected community of digital creators. Our vision for the Pan-African Creator Award is to create a platform where African digital creators can gain international visibility, attract global partnerships, and inspire a new generation of creators. By shining a spotlight on the incredible talent found throughout Africa, we hope to contribute to the growth and development of the digital content creation industry on the continent.

Closing off, where do you see these DStv Content Creator Awards going in the future?

Looking ahead, we envision the DStv Content Creator Awards to be the biggest initiative of its kind on the African continent, and it’s well on its way to being that, especially with the inclusion of the Pan-African Creator Award. After focusing purely on South African creators in the past two years, we’re so happy to have been able to extend the platform to include the continent now too. The impact of the awards is significant, it’s given creators work, brand endorsements and funding and has opened doors to new career paths for many. With ongoing support, we hope that it remains a beacon of excellence and inspiration, creating opportunities for creators to prosper and for their work to reach even greater heights.

Tyra Banks Takes Legal Action Over Netflix Documentary,

Tyra Banks

Supermodel and television personality Tyra Banks has launched a defamation lawsuit against Netflix and the creators of a documentary examining the controversial legacy of the hit reality show America’s Next Top Model.

Court documents filed on Saturday reveal that Banks is accusing the streaming giant and the filmmakers behind Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model of presenting a misleading portrayal of her through selective editing and the omission of key details from interviews she participated in for the project.

According to the lawsuit, Banks believes the documentary failed to accurately reflect her comments and unfairly portrayed her in a negative light, causing damage to her personal and professional reputation.

The legal complaint names Netflix, documentary directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan, as well as production companies EverWonder Studio and 89 Blocks Holdings as defendants in the case.

Banks is seeking financial compensation and has requested a jury trial. Her claims include defamation, false light, breach of contract and false endorsement.

At the time of publication, neither Netflix nor the documentary’s producers had publicly commented on the legal proceedings.

The lawsuit centres on Banks’ participation in an extensive interview for the documentary, during which she reportedly addressed criticism aimed at America’s Next Top Model. She says she openly discussed aspects of the long-running reality series that she now views differently and reflected on moments she would approach in another way today.

However, Banks alleges that much of the context surrounding those discussions was removed from the final cut, resulting in a distorted representation of her views.

Among the specific issues raised is the documentary’s treatment of former contestant Shandi Sullivan and a memorable incident that occurred during the show’s second season while filming in Milan, Italy.

According to the lawsuit, the documentary suggests that Banks was unable to remember Sullivan’s experience when questioned about it. Banks disputes that portrayal, claiming that the complete interview footage shows she clearly recalled the incident, but that those remarks were excluded from the finished programme.

The former talk-show host also argues that the documentary ignored important background information, including periods when she lived in Australia and her continued communication with individuals featured in the programme through text messages, voice notes and video exchanges.

Another point of contention involves comments made by former America’s Next Top Model judge Miss J Alexander. In the documentary, Alexander reportedly stated that Banks did not visit him after he suffered a stroke in 2022.

Banks challenges that claim in her lawsuit, arguing that the documentary failed to present a complete picture of their relationship and interactions.

The legal battle adds another layer to the ongoing debate surrounding America’s Next Top Model, a show that has faced increased scrutiny in recent years. Former contestants and viewers have revisited some of the programme’s challenges, storylines and judging decisions, prompting broader discussions about reality television standards and accountability.

With the lawsuit now underway, attention is likely to turn to how the courts assess Banks’ claims and whether the documentary’s portrayal crossed the line from critical examination into defamation.

Media personality and musician Molemo Maarohanye, widely known by his stage name Jub Jub, has reportedly been arrested in connection with an alleged kidnapping and shooting incident involving an e-hailing driver in Edenvale, Gauteng.

Although police have not officially identified the suspect, reports from eNCA indicate that the arrested individual is Maarohanye. He is expected to make his first court appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the incident unfolded early on Sunday morning when an e-hailing driver transported a female passenger to a residence in Edenvale.

Police allege that upon arriving at the destination, the driver was confronted by a man who accused him of being romantically involved with his girlfriend. The confrontation allegedly escalated when the suspect forced the driver into his vehicle and prevented him from leaving the scene.

Authorities further claim that during the incident, a firearm was discharged in the direction of the driver. Fortunately, the victim was not injured.

The driver reportedly managed to escape from the situation and drove directly to a nearby police station, where he reported the matter to authorities.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the South African Police Service confirmed the arrest of a 45-year-old man on charges including kidnapping, the unlawful discharge of a firearm, and defeating the ends of justice.

Following the complaint, police officers launched an immediate operation that led to the suspect’s arrest shortly afterwards. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The arrest marks another legal challenge for Maarohanye, whose previous encounters with the justice system have frequently attracted widespread public attention and media coverage over the years.

At this stage, police have not disclosed additional details about the case, and investigations remain ongoing. More information is expected to emerge when the matter is brought before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.

Doja Cat Roasts Elon Musk While Begging for X Feature Return

Doja Cat and Elon Musk

If there is one celebrity who never filters herself online, it is Doja Cat. The rapper once again turned heads on social media this week after launching into a hilarious rant aimed at X owner Elon Musk while asking for the return of a deleted platform feature.

Doja hopped onto X with a request many users have made before — bringing back audio posts. But instead of a calm suggestion, she delivered it in true Doja Cat fashion: chaotic, brutally funny and completely unfiltered.

“Hey Elon, if u see this, please put the audio post feature back on here,” she wrote before immediately switching gears and throwing in a series of wild insults aimed at the billionaire tech boss.

The Grammy-winning artist did not stop there. She followed up with another post that escalated the situation even further, continuing to roast Musk’s appearance while repeating her plea for the feature to return.

Her posts quickly exploded online, with social media users reacting to the rapper’s unmatched ability to turn a simple customer complaint into full-blown entertainment.

What could have been a basic request about app updates instead became another viral Doja Cat moment, complete with bizarre descriptions, over-the-top comparisons and internet chaos.

Fans joked that the audio feature itself probably became secondary while Musk was busy catching insults from every direction.

Others were not particularly surprised, pointing out that Doja Cat has built an entire reputation around unpredictable online behaviour and saying whatever comes to mind without hesitation.

Over the years, the rapper has regularly clashed with fans online, challenged stan culture and openly criticised the pressure placed on celebrities to behave a certain way on social media.

Unlike many stars who rely heavily on publicists and carefully managed online images, Doja often treats her social accounts like a live stream of her thoughts — sometimes hilarious, sometimes controversial and occasionally both at the same time.

Her blunt approach has landed her in trouble more than once, but it has also become part of the reason people remain fascinated by her online presence.

The singer previously made headlines after criticising actor Timothée Chalamet over comments linked to ballet and opera. She later admitted that some of her reaction came from wanting attention and validation, showing a level of self-awareness that fans have become used to seeing from her.

That pattern of speaking impulsively and later reflecting on it has become closely tied to her public persona.

Despite the criticism she occasionally receives, many fans appreciate Doja Cat for refusing to present herself as polished or overly scripted online.

Her latest Elon Musk rant is simply the newest chapter in a long history of unpredictable internet moments that keep followers entertained — even if they leave everyone slightly confused afterward.

For now, it remains unclear whether Musk will respond to her request or if the audio post feature will ever make a comeback.

But one thing is certain: if Doja Cat wants a platform update, she is definitely going to ask for it in the loudest way possible.
