Police efforts to combat the proliferation of counterfeit goods nationwide have shown significant progress, with recent seizures in June alone totaling over 40,000 fake items valued at approximately R40 million.
According to police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk, the operations have led to the apprehension of four suspects involved in various counterfeit activities. The most recent operation occurred at the intersection of Rahima Moosa and Delvers Streets in Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
“The National Counterfeit Goods Unit, in collaboration with our crime-fighting partners, executed a search and seizure operation resulting in the confiscation of more than 15,000 counterfeit items,” van Wyk reported. The seized goods have an estimated street value of R12.8 million.
These efforts highlight law enforcement’s ongoing commitment to tackling the illicit trade in counterfeit goods, which not only undermines legitimate businesses but also poses risks to consumer health and safety. The police continue to collaborate closely with relevant stakeholders to identify and dismantle networks involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit products.
Van Wyk emphasized the importance of public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities related to counterfeit goods. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could assist us in our efforts to clamp down on this illegal trade,” she added.
The seizures in June underscore a broader strategy by law enforcement to protect intellectual property rights and uphold fair trade practices across South Africa. As investigations continue and suspects are brought to justice, authorities remain committed to safeguarding consumers and businesses from the detrimental effects of counterfeit goods.
