DA Launches Probe into Racist Language Video Following Renaldo Gouws’ Suspension

Renaldo Gouws

Cape Town — The Democratic Alliance (DA) has swiftly suspended its controversial Member of Parliament, Renaldo Gouws, following the surfacing of racist and homophobic videos from over a decade ago. Gouws, known for his YouTube channel and previous role as a Nelson Mandela Bay councillor, will forfeit several taxpayer-funded benefits, including his R1.27 million annual salary, subsidised medical aid, and free flights.

The videos, which resurfaced shortly after Gouws’ swearing-in for the 7th administration at the National Assembly, show him using derogatory language aimed at South Africans in a manner described as racially offensive and homophobic.

In response to the videos, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) announced its intention to pursue legal action against Gouws in the Equality Court in Gqeberha for hate speech and harassment under the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act 2000.

DA’s Chief Whip in Parliament, Siviwe Gwarube, emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing the matter seriously and swiftly. “We rebuke any kind of racism and homophobia in any form,” Gwarube stated, noting that the issue has been escalated to the party’s highest decision-making body led by Hellen Zille.

Zille, addressing the severity of the situation, stated that if the authenticity of the videos is confirmed, Gouws will be dismissed from his position as an MP without delay. This decision underscores the party’s stance against racial discrimination and offensive language.

Renaldo Gouws has previously apologized for similar remarks made in other videos, citing immaturity and acknowledging the need for accountability. However, the recent resurgence of these videos has prompted widespread condemnation and calls for his removal from public office.

The DA’s actions have been met with support from various quarters, including the ANC Youth League, which has expressed satisfaction with Gouws’ suspension and called for further disciplinary measures against him.
