Kefilwe Mabote

Johannesburg, 24 July 2024 | Fashion icon Kefilwe Mabote, celebrated for her impeccable style and influential presence, has built up an impressive social media following over the years. Through her content, she continues to inspire followers with her incredible fashion sense while spotlighting local designers and upcoming trends.

Last year, Kefilwe took home the Fashion And Style Award at the DStv Content Creator Awards, further cementing her status as a leading figure in the fashion industry. As she continues to be a prestigious voice in the local fashion industry, Kefilwe dishes her fashion journey so far, the pieces she can’t live without, and what this incredible recognition means to her.

You’re a fashion powerhouse, where do you draw your style inspiration from?

Inspiration for my fashion choices often comes from a mix of global runway shows, street fashion, and the rich cultural heritage of South Africa. I also draw significant inspiration from my travels and the different cultures and fashions I encounter.

You won the DStv Content Creator Award in the Fashion And Style category last year, what did this winning moment feel like?

It’s always humbling when my work is acknowledged-I’ve been in this space for over a decade and to see the impact of what I love to do continue to find its way into spaces that find it worthy of being celebrated is rewarding.

How do you manage to always stand out when it comes to fashion?

A careful selection process to ensure all collaborations are in alignment with my values and style. Authenticity and passion are my guiding principles, ensuring that any collaboration feels true to my personal brand.

Now that you have the DStv Content Creator Awards acknowledgement, do you think there is an added layer of pressure to stay on top of your game?

Own lane, own pace, own race is my motto so I’m always grateful for a nod but I’m also laser-focused on where I want to go so the conversation around pressure is more around the pressure for me to become more of who I am while embracing my growth and evolution. Always onwards and upwards.

When it comes to fashion, there are tips and tricks everyone uses, what would be three that you can share with others on how to up their style game?

1. Dress for your body type: Understanding your body shape and proportions is key to dressing well. Find pieces that flatter your figure, whether it’s accentuating your waist, balancing your hips, or elongating your legs.

2. Invest in more timeless items over trendy one: Focus on purchasing more timeless, quality pieces that fit well, rather than fast fashion items that may quickly go out of style. This approach will help you build a cohesive, stylish wardrobe.

3. Accessories can make or break an outfit: Add a statement piece of jewellery, a quality handbag, or a stylish hat to take your look from ordinary to extraordinary. Accessories can add personality and polish to any ensemble.

You are always travelling the world while looking amazing, how does the style globally compare to here at home?

The continuous globalisation of fashion creates a thin line between local and international trends but I think our different cultures are really what sets us apart in the way we incorporate modern designs to our traditional materials. These offer a fresh inspiration and insights into global fashion trends.

What are your fashion must-haves?

Classic essential items: Trench coat, Jeans, white shirt, blazer, stiletto, and of course a little black dress.

Nominees for the 2024 DStv Content Creator Awards will be unveiled on 15 August 2024 and winners will be unveiled during a glittering celebration in Johannesburg on 12 October, celebrating the continent’s best content creators. For more information, visit www.contentcreatorawards.co.za.

Court Finds Musa Khawula in Contempt Over Malema Claims

Musa Khawula

The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has ruled that controversial blogger Musa Khawula is in contempt of court after he failed to apologise to Julius Malema and his wife, Mantoa Matlala-Malema.

The ruling follows an earlier court directive ordering Khawula to retract and apologise for defamatory remarks he made about the couple on social media. Despite the order, Khawula refused to comply.

As a result, the court handed down a 30-day direct imprisonment sentence, wholly suspended for 30 days on condition that he adheres to the court’s instruction. Should he fail to comply within that period, he faces arrest and enforcement of the sentence.

The matter stems from allegations made in February 2026, when Khawula claimed that Malema and his wife were heading for a divorce after more than a decade of marriage. In his posts, he alleged that Matlala-Malema had grown weary of her husband’s alleged infidelity and intended to leave what he described as a “stressful marriage.”
The court found these statements to be both unlawful and defamatory, ruling that they caused reputational harm to the couple.

In a move that further aggravated the situation, Khawula appeared to mock the court’s order. Instead of issuing an apology, he shared a clip from the song “Sorry” by Beyoncé, prominently featuring the repeated lyric “I ain’t sorry.”
He accompanied the post with a message directed at Malema, sarcastically stating: “Hi @Julius_S_Malema baby, please find the attached statement for your earliest convenience.”

Khawula doubled down on his stance, insisting he stood by his claims and would not apologise, despite the legal consequences hanging over him.

The case highlights the growing scrutiny around social media commentary and the legal risks of publishing unverified or defamatory claims online.

Zee Nxumalo and Somizi

South African media personality and entertainer Somizi Mhlongo has once again shown his supportive side in the entertainment industry, this time sending a heartfelt message to rising star Zee Nxumalo following her apparent snub at the recent Metro FM Music Awards.

The Metro FM Music Awards, known for celebrating excellence in South African music, have once again sparked debate among fans after several notable artists were left out of key categories. Among those discussed on social media was Zee Nxumalo, who has been gaining momentum in the local music scene with her distinctive sound and growing fanbase.

Following the awards ceremony, Somizi took to social media to share words of encouragement directed at Zee Nxumalo. In his message, he praised her talent, consistency, and rising influence in the industry, urging her not to be discouraged by industry recognition systems that often overlook emerging voices.

While the exact wording of his message varied across reposts, the sentiment was clear: Somizi encouraged Zee Nxumalo to remain focused on her craft, reminding her that awards are not the only measure of success in the music industry.

Fans quickly reacted to the interaction, with many praising Somizi for using his platform to uplift younger artists. Others joined the conversation by defending Zee Nxumalo’s growing catalogue of work, arguing that her impact is already visible regardless of award nominations or wins.

Zee Nxumalo herself has not publicly responded in detail to the snub, but she has continued to share content and performances online, suggesting she remains focused on her music journey.

The discussion around the Metro FM Music Awards once again highlights a recurring theme in South African entertainment: the gap between industry recognition and public popularity. As conversations continue online, many fans are calling for greater transparency and inclusivity in future award selections.

For now, Somizi’s message stands out as a reminder of the importance of mentorship and encouragement in a highly competitive industry—especially for rising stars like Zee Nxumalo who are still carving out their space in the spotlight.

Shebeshxt Court Case Takes Emotional Turn as Judge Rejects Child Argument

Shebeshxt

The ongoing court case involving Limpopo musician Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, popularly known as Shebeshxt, has taken an emotional turn following tense exchanges between the defence and the court.

During the latest proceedings, Shebeshxt’s legal team attempted to convince the court to consider his family circumstances, particularly focusing on his child. The defence argued that he should be released, stating that his partner is unemployed and financially dependent on him, and that his continued detention places strain on his family.

However, the presiding judge firmly dismissed this argument, making it clear that the child should not be used as a reason to secure his release. The judge emphasised that the court cannot allow a minor to be turned into a “victim” of legal proceedings, reinforcing that the case must be decided on its merits rather than emotional appeals.

The case has drawn widespread attention across South Africa, with many describing it as deeply troubling due to the serious nature of the allegations. Shebeshxt is facing charges linked to violent incidents, including allegations of attempted murder following a shooting involving members of the public.

Court proceedings so far have painted a concerning picture, with claims of intimidation and interference in previous cases adding to the gravity of the situation. These factors have contributed to the state’s argument that granting bail could pose risks, further complicating the defence’s efforts to secure his release.

Despite the defence’s push for leniency, the court has maintained a firm stance, with Shebeshxt remaining in custody as the legal process continues. The matter is expected to proceed through higher courts, indicating that the case is far from reaching a conclusion.

The judge’s remarks have sparked debate, particularly around the balance between personal circumstances and the need for accountability. While some believe family hardship should be taken into account, others support the court’s position that justice should not be influenced by factors unrelated to the charges.

As proceedings continue, the case remains one of the most closely watched in the country, raising broader questions about accountability, the justice system, and the responsibilities of public figures.
