Wits University Fees Must Fall leaders say Mcebo Dlamini’s arrest confirms that he is on an alleged hit list made by the university to cripple the movement.
According to reports, Dlamini was arrested at his res at the university in the early hours of this morning.
The former wits SRC president has been active in the ongoing protests at the university that have seen the institution shut for the last three weeks.
Wits Fees Must Fall activist Busisiwe Seabe says Dlamini’s arrest doesn’t come as a surprise.
“Because he was also trying to jump out of the window once again. He has been doing so for the past couple of days now. He has to jump out of the window to escape every time they storm into his room.”
She says she has reason to believe that the university has a hit list noting students who have been active in the protests.
“We can confirm with certainty that Mcebo is on something that is called the ‘hit list’ from the university, where all the Fees Must Fall leaders and other students that the university feels are pertinent in protests should be arrested.”
Seabe says police claim Dlamini was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer, but the charge has not been confirmed by police.
She add leaders of the Fees Must Fall movement are not in hiding – but have vacated their residences for safety reasons.
It’s understood a group of Wits students are planning to march to the police station where Dlamini is being held, but details are still sketchy at this stage.
