Around this time a year ago DJ Sbu’s life was about to change. He decided to embark on a brave new business venture, launching the first black owned energy drink in Africa. His ambitious plans also involved a range of other products, which he has said will be rolled out later this year.

And what a bumpy ride it has been. He was fired from Metro FM for promoting MoFaya, was frowned upon for handing it out an funerals and got backlash for that fake Forbes cover. Sbu himself has said that he had no idea that going into business would be so tough, yet so rewarding.

Now, a year on, he’s taken to his Instagram account to reflect on the 12 month journey.

“Based on our business plan projections we have outdone ourselves. We are working hard behind the scenes overcoming our distribution challenges. We have the highest demand for any product in the market & we arw gum ked at how many people can’t wait to lay their hands on our brand.”

Exactly today a year ago the first can of @mofaya_official was sold & a brand was born. Created by Sbu Leope (Tembisa) & @siphiwelikhulenishongwe (Kliptown Soweto) MoFaya has achieved what many dream of. They say advertising is a war of attention. Whoever gets the most attention wins the battle. Hardly a year Mofaya has gone on to become one of the most recognisable & spoken about authentically SA brands. We pride ourselves for reaching this milestone. Many start-up companies don't make a year. This is an achievement for us to see our dream come true & get South Africa talking like it had over the past year. Thank you all for the support, the dialogue, debates, criticism, arguments, inspiration, up & downs. We hope @mofaya_official inspires your inner dream, that no matter what it is possible. Based on our business plan projections we have outdone ourselves. We are working hard behind the scenes overcoming our distribution challenges. We have the highest demand for any product in the market & we arw gum ked at how many people can't wait to lay their hands on our brand. It is yours, not ours. Our win is a win for us all. @mofaya_official belongs to you. We created it for you. 2016 is the year we flood the whole country with this amazing brand. We are looking forward to making more history this year. Come celebrate with us for a good cause at the #SLEFBenefitConcert proudly brought you by Doves on the 7th Feb at 10am Dries Niemandt Park in Kempton Park R120 at the gate. All proceeds to go to students tertiary tuition. #HappyBirthdayMofaya #MofayaTurns1
