Thulani Mashaba, the uThungulu District deputy mayor and ANC chairperson of the Musa Dladla region, died in car accident in Ballito on Thursday.
KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the driver allegedly lost control and crashed into a concrete barrier.
“The car overturned and he died on the scene. Two occupants were injured – one was taken to a hospital in Ballito and the other was taken to Victoria Hospital in Tongaat,” said Mngomezulu.
The BMW X5, which was in the north-bound lane, was taken to Durban, she said.
According to the Zululand Observer, Mashaba was travelling to Richards Bay from King Shaka Airport when the driver allegedly lost control on the N2 near the Ballito on-ramp.
Paul Herbst from IPSS Medical Rescue, who was called to the scene at about 22:00 on Thursday, said Mashaba was coming from a business meeting and his bodyguards had picked him up from the King Shaka International Airport.
On the way back the driver is believed to have lost control just before the Ballito on-ramp. The vehicle rolled several times. All the occupants were ejected from the vehicle.
“On arrival of IPSS rescue, one person was declared dead and two people, who were in a critical condition, were treated by the advanced life support paramedics and transported to hospital,” said Herbst.
ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala was not available to comment.
